OpenAI seems very serious about staying ahead of Anthropic. After launching GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI quickly followed with ChatGPT Images 2.5, while Claude still can’t generate images directly in chat.

ChatGPT Images 2.5 makes the ChatGPT image editor faster, more accurate, and easier to use. You also get new features like Sketch, Comments, reference photos, and Templates.

In this guide, I’ll show you what each feature does and how well it works.

I. What‘s New with ChatGPT Image Editor 2.5

The ChatGPT image editor is the part inside ChatGPT that lets you create and edit images. With Images 2.5, OpenAI has made this experience much more direct and easier to use, especially when you want to edit an image without rewriting the whole prompt.

1. Biggest Upgrades

What I like most is that Images 2.5 gives you more ways to work with an image, instead of just typing a prompt and waiting for the result.

Here are the upgrades you’ll see:

Sketch-to-image: you can draw directly in ChatGPT and use your sketch as a visual guide for the final image.
Precise editing: Images 2.5 can make focused changes while keeping the rest of the image more stable. You can also place comments directly on an image for more specific edits.
Templates: you can start with ready-made formats like posters, merch, flyers, and product photos.
Better consistency: it can preserve subjects from reference photos and keep earlier changes more consistent across multiple edits.
Faster generation: OpenAI says Images 2.5 renders up to 50% faster than Images 2.0, so iterating on an idea feels quicker.
Prompt sharing: you can share the prompt behind an image so someone else can rerun your idea with their own photos and details.

From what I tested, character consistency is one of the clearest improvements. Even when I edit an image several times, the subject still keeps the original details.

2. Where to Find the New Image Editor

You can find the ChatGPT image editor inside the ChatGPT web app.

You just need to look at the left sidebar and click Images. If your account already has the update, you may see the Updated label and new templates like Logos or Illustrations.

OpenAI is rolling out Images 2.5 in stages, so you may not see the new features right away.

II. Creating Images From Sketches

Sketch lets you turn a rough drawing into a finished image inside ChatGPT. You only need to show the basic layout, then ChatGPT uses your sketch and prompt together to build the final result.

To open Sketch, type @Sketch in the chat or pick the canvas option from the menu.

Then draw the layout with simple shapes, using a mouse, a stylus, or just your finger. If you want to create a living room, you can mark where the couch, TV, windows, dog, and other objects should go.

For this example, I’ll sketch a simple house. It can be very rough because ChatGPT mainly needs a clear idea of the layout.

When you finish drawing, click Approve to add the sketch to the chat. Then write a short prompt to explain what you want ChatGPT to create.

Turn this rough sketch into a realistic modern house. Keep the same front-view layout, roof shape, front door position, and window placement from my sketch. Use clean white walls, dark window frames, and a simple modern roof. Keep the house proportions close to the drawing, but improve the lines and structure so the building looks realistic. Add natural daylight and a simple outdoor setting. Don’t add extra doors, windows, or major design elements that aren’t shown in the sketch.

Once you send the sketch with this prompt, ChatGPT uses your drawing as the main layout and fills in the missing visual details. If your sketch is for something else, you can change the subject, style, materials, or setting while keeping the same structure in the prompt.

If your sketch already shows the layout clearly, use the prompt to add details that are hard to draw, like style, colors, materials, or lighting.

For this house, I’ll keep the roof, front door, and window positions the same, then let ChatGPT improve the design around them.

III. Editing Images With the ChatGPT Image Editor

After ChatGPT creates your image, you can edit small parts without writing a new prompt from the beginning. I’ll keep using the house example so the workflow stays easy to follow.

Every edit here is saved as its own version. If a change doesn’t work out, you can scroll back through Edit mode and return to any earlier version of the image.

1. Markup and Comments

Step 1: choose Markup and mark the exact area you want to change. For example, you can circle the left side of the house if you want to add a tree there.

Step 2: add a clear prompt for that area:

Add a medium-sized olive tree inside the marked area. Keep it away from the windows and front door. Match the lighting, camera angle, and realistic style of the original house.

Step 3: if you want to edit several existing details, use Comments and click directly on each area you want to change. For this house:

Change the front door to dark wood with a simple modern design, and make the exterior walls warm white. 

Keep the same door size, window positions, roof shape, lighting, shadows, camera angle, and overall structure. 

Don’t change any other part of the house or add new objects.

This tells ChatGPT exactly what should change and what should stay the same, which gives you more control over the final result.

2. Erase and Background Removal

Step 1: if you only want to remove one small detail, use Erase and mark the exact area to delete. In this house example, I’ll select the bush in front and remove it.

Step 2: after you send the edit, ChatGPT fills that area using the background around it. A tighter selection usually helps ChatGPT keep nearby details unchanged.

→ If you want to remove the whole background instead, switch to Background Removal.

It works best when the image has one clear subject, like a person or a product. ChatGPT can usually separate that subject cleanly and keep the important details.

Remove the entire background and keep the subject unchanged. 

Preserve the original edges, hair details, clothing, lighting, and proportions. 

Make the background fully transparent.

If the image has many overlapping objects or a very busy background, ChatGPT may not separate everything cleanly. In that case, a tighter crop or a clearer subject image gives you better results.

IV. Working with Real Photos

ChatGPT Images 2.5 works really well with real photos, especially when you want to change one part and keep the main subject close to the original.

1. Restore and Modify Existing Photos

You can upload an old photo and ask ChatGPT to clean it up, reduce glare, or change one detail. For this kind of edit, I’d make the instruction like this:

Keep the same face, expression, hairstyle, body shape, camera angle, and background composition. 

Replace the current clothes with a simple dark suit and white shirt. 

Keep the result realistic and close to the original photo.

This helps ChatGPT understand what it can change without changing the person too much.

2. Preview Home and Design Changes

Reference photos are also useful when you want to see an idea before making any real changes. For this example, I’ll upload a photo of a backyard and ask ChatGPT to redesign it as a rock garden.

Redesign this backyard as a simple modern rock garden. 

Keep the current size, fences, house position, and camera angle unchanged. 

Add a few natural rocks, low plants, and a clean walking path. 

Keep the design realistic and easy to build.

If the first result feels too busy, you can ask ChatGPT to reduce the number of plants, rocks, or decorations, no need to start again.

3. Keep People and Pets Consistent

Images 2.5 is better at keeping the same subject across several edits. This matters when you’re changing the pose, clothes, background, or style but still want the person or pet to look the same.

Now, I’ll upload a photo of a dog and ask ChatGPT to change the scene while keeping its main features.

Place this dog on a soft beige blanket in a bright living room. 

Keep the same face, fur color, fur pattern, body shape, eye color, and overall appearance from the original photo. 

Change only the pose and background. 

Make the dog look relaxed and natural, and keep the result realistic.

After ChatGPT creates the first version, I can continue editing the same image. I can remove the collar or change the background while asking ChatGPT to keep the dog unchanged.

The key is to tell ChatGPT which details must stay the same.

V. Templates in the ChatGPT Image Editor 2.5

In ChatGPT Images 2.5, you can choose formats like illustration or interior design, then add a reference image so ChatGPT has a clear direction.

For illustration, you can upload a real photo and ask ChatGPT to keep the subject while changing the visual style.

For interior design, a room photo can help you test a new look while keeping the same structure.

I’ll redesign a real room in a Japandi style:

Keep the current room size, window positions, doors, floor plan, and camera angle unchanged. 

Use light wood furniture, soft neutral colors, simple shapes, and natural materials. 

Keep the space realistic and practical, and don’t add any structural elements that aren’t shown in the original photo.

If the template gives you the wrong layout, a screenshot or reference image can show ChatGPT what you expected. This is usually easier than trying to explain the whole layout again with text.

ChatGPT Images 2.5 gives you more control, but the result still depends a lot on how clear your image and prompt are. These are the main things I’d keep in mind.
