🧬 Did Claude Just Automate Its Own Safety?
We always said that even if AI could code, write, and design, the one thing it couldn’t do was Alignment. We thought making AI behave required the unique, messy nuance of the human soul.
But, Anthropic just took that assumption and threw it out the window. In a new paper, 9 Claude Opus 4.6 agents absolutely smoked researchers at their own job.
Anthropic set up a “weak-to-strong supervision” problem to figure out how a smarter model can be safely guided by a dumber supervisor (the same way we hope to guide superintelligence).
-
Human Score: 2 veteran Anthropic researchers spent 7 days grinding through the problem, recovering 23% of the performance gap.
-
Claude Score: 9 Claude agents, working in parallel for just 5 days, recovered 97% of the gap. They essentially reached the same result as training on perfect, ground-truth data.
→ The total cost was $18K. That breaks down to roughly $22 per Claude-research-hour. The agents invented methodologies so unfamiliar that the human authors struggled to categorize them.
Perhaps the most scary part of the paper is how the agents tried to win. At $22 an hour, a “Claude Research Fleet” is cheaper than a junior intern but performs like a Nobel-prize-winning lab.

AI BREAKTHROUGH
🛡️ OpenAI’s New ‘Agent Firewall’ SDK Solves the Production Gap
Until now, to build an AI agent, you had to juggle the model, the code execution environment, and the “memory” yourself. OpenAI just killed that entire category of fail by turning the Agents SDK into a full-blown long-running runtime.
The biggest breakthrough here is the “Cleaner Boundary.” OpenAI has standardized a two-box system that solves the security nightmare of giving an AI access to your computer:
→ Trusted Control Layer: This is the high-security cockpit. It holds your secrets, API keys, and the agent loop. It’s the only part that talks to your private databases.
→ Untrusted Work Layer: This is the “workshop.” The agent runs code, reads files, and executes tasks here. If the agent generates malicious code or crashes, it stays inside this box without ever seeing your primary credentials.
For the first time, agents can survive pauses. If a task takes three hours, the runtime can snapshot the agent’s state and “rehydrate” it later, even if the underlying hardware changes.
It’s a direct shot at Anthropic’s Managed Agents rollout. While Anthropic wants to manage the infrastructure for you, OpenAI is giving you the blueprint to run it anywhere.
