📱 Google’s Ultra-Small Open AI Model Can Run Offline on Your Phone

googles-ultra-small-open-ai-model-can-run-offline-on-your-phone

We’ve seen AI models get bigger, beefier, and cloud-hungrier. But what if we went the other way? Meet Gemma 3 270M – an ultra-lightweight, open-weight AI model from Google that runs entirely on phones, browsers, and even a Raspberry Pi.

So what’s inside this micro beast? It’s split between:

  • 170M embedding parameters from a massive 256K vocabulary

  • 100M transformer block params for general reasoning

Despite its size, it’s capable of:

  • Instruction-following out of the box

  • Creative generation (check the bedtime story demo)

  • Structured tasks like classification, query routing, and more

You can grab it in two flavors → Pretrained or Instruction-tuned. Both are free to download and fine-tune.

In testing on the Pixel 9 Pro’s Tensor G4 chip, it ran 25 full conversations using just 0.75% battery. That’s… almost absurdly efficient.

It runs locally in-browser too. Google dropped a story generator app built on Transformers.js that runs fully offline.

→ You pick a character, setting, plot twist → the model weaves a fun little tale with zero server calls.

Why It Matters: While it’s not “open-source” in the strict sense, Google’s custom license lets devs modify, deploy, and commercialize freely, as long as they follow the use rules. We’ve been obsessed with cloud-scale LLMs, but the reality is most apps don’t need them.

😅 Gemini is also missing the O.G. GPT-4o model, because it’s calling itself “a disgrace” & getting stuck in depressive self-destructive loops. Sounds pretty human!

💊 AI Designed Brand-New Antibiotics that Kill Drug-resistant Superbugs

ai-designed-brand-new-antibiotics-that-kill-drug-resistant-superbugs

And they actually work, even against deadly drug-resistant infections like MRSA and gonorrhea. That’s AI-powered drug discovery, live from MIT.

This week, researchers at MIT used generative AI to create completely new antibiotic compounds → ones that don’t exist in any known chemical library. We’re talking 36 million+ compounds designed by AI.

Just two made it through to synthesis but both worked. That’s insane. From there:

  • 7M molecules were generated to target drug-resistant gonorrhea
→ kills the bug by targeting a protein no drug has touched before (LptA)

  • 29M molecules were generated for MRSA (Staph infections)
→ cleared MRSA skin infections in mice

And these compounds don’t resemble existing antibiotics, so resistance hasn’t caught up to them yet. And yeah, they actually synthesized them and tested them in mice. Both drugs worked.

This was AI imagining totally new molecules from scratch, things humans wouldn’t have even thought to test. Like hallucinations, but useful.

Basically, anywhere we need to discover compounds fast, AI could become the front line. This might be the closest thing we’ve seen to real AI-native invention.
