AI INSIGHTS

🧬 AI Designed Functional Antibodies From Scratch In 2 Weeks, Not 2 Years

ai-designed-functional-antibodies-from-scratch-in-2-weeks-not-2-years

You’ve heard of AI writing essays, making music, even generating movies. But now? It’s engineering custom antibodies from scratch and the results are insane.

Meet Chai-2, the newest AI from Chai Discovery (backed by OpenAI), and possibly the future of medicine.

What makes Chai-2 wild?

  • It creates new antibodies without needing prior examples.

  • Just give it the structure of a disease target, and it designs proteins to attack it.

→ Think: Photoshop for proteins, you point, and it sticks the antibody there.

  • It got hits on 50% of disease targets.

  • Tested just 20 candidates per target.

    → That’s a 100x jump over traditional hit rates (~0.1%).

→ This is the kind of result that makes biotech CEOs sit up straight and reallocate their entire R&D budget. Most biotech labs screen millions of antibody candidates across months or years. Chai-2 did it in 2 weeks.

Drug companies often ignore small patient groups because testing is expensive and slow.

→ But if an AI like Chai-2 can crank out viable candidates quickly, we suddenly have a path to adjusted, precision medicines for all kinds of overlooked conditions.

Why It Matters: Drug development is expensive. Like ignore-rare-diseases expensive. You don’t touch a condition unless there’s a big enough market. But now? Chai-2 means: Lower R&D costs + Custom meds for rare diseases. And for patients? That means treatments that might’ve never existed, now actually within reach.

🧠 Can AI Think Strategically? 140,000 Prisoner’s Dilemma Games Say… Yeah

can-ai-think-strategically-140000-prisoners-dilemma-games-say-yeah

Forget benchmarks and word predictions, researchers just put LLMs into game theory combat mode to see if they can actually reason strategically. And the results? Weirdly human.

Here’s what they did:

  • Ran 140,000 games of the Prisoner’s Dilemma using AI agents from OpenAI, Google (Gemini), and Anthropic (Claude)

  • Each model had to choose: cooperate or defect, classic game theory showdown

  • Before each move, the models had to write out their reasoning

This let researchers track how decisions were made. And the models did reason just differently. Each one developed a distinct strategy:

  • Gemini: Ruthless. Calculated, reactive, and quick to defect if betrayed

  • GPT-4: Weirdly idealistic. Often cooperative, even when exploited

  • Claude: The peacemaker. Most forgiving, even after being backstabbed

But wait, they all trained on the same stuff? Yep and that’s the wild part. All 3 were trained on similar datasets → But they developed different personalities

And researchers even mapped unique “strategic fingerprints” based on how each model responded to betrayal, success, or trust. It’s proving that:

  • LLMs can do strategic reasoning, not just mimic text

  • Future AI systems (especially agents) won’t be interchangeable

Now imagine them all on the same team… or negotiating against each other.
