🔁 Meta “AI Superintelligence” Effort Sounds just Like Its Failed “Metaverse”

From empty VR worlds to billion-dollar AI dreams, Zuck’s new tech revolution sounds very familiar. Remember when Meta rebranded from Facebook in 2021 and promised the metaverse would replace the internet? Well, fast forward to 2025, and Horizon Worlds is basically a ghost town and even Meta employees avoid using it.

Now Zuckerberg’s doing it again, this time with “AI superintelligence for everyone.” A fresh memo to employees kicked off Meta’s next big moonshot:

• AI friends to fill the social gap: “Most people have 3 friends. What if AI gave you the feeling of 15?”

Zuck says this lab will build “the next generation of AI models” and kick off “a new era for humanity.” Yeah, it’s that kind of pitch again.

Yes, there are differences. This time around, Meta actually has some traction:

• 1B+ people use Meta AI tools monthly (compared to a few hundred thousand in the metaverse).

• AI coding tools are being used internally.

• People already form real attachments to AI personas.

But… the issues are still there:

• Current models still hallucinate facts.

• Reasoning is hit-or-miss.

• Even simple logic or game-playing breaks them sometimes.

  → So while AI is hotter than VR ever was, the superintelligence part? Still science fiction.

Why It Matters: Meta is rebranding… again. It keeps the company exciting for investors and helps attract top AI talent. (It also explains the absurd compensation packages.) That’s either helpful… or dystopian, depending on how you look at it.

🧠 New ‘Mind-Reading’ AI Predicts What You Will Do Next, And It’s Shockingly Accurate

Researchers at Helmholtz Munich trained a “mind-reading” AI called Centaur, and it’s shockingly good at predicting what we’ll do next. It’s trained on 10 million real choices from 60,000+ people across 160 psychology experiments.

Here’s how they built it:

• They took Meta’s LLaMA 3.1, converted all the psychology tasks into plain English

• Then fine-tuned the model using just 0.15% of its parameters.
  → The whole thing trained in just 5 days.

The result: Centaur beat 14 classic cognitive models in predicting human behavior across 31 out of 32 tasks.

Even when the researchers changed the stories, tweaked the rules, or introduced completely new logic problems, Centaur adapted like a human.

Even wilder: The internal structure of Centaur started looking more like a real human brain. Without being trained on brain data. It just… aligned.

Oh and it didn’t stop there. Centaur actually discovered a new decision-making strategy that outperformed current psychology theories.

Centaur acts like a virtual human test subject, letting scientists simulate behavior, test theories, and explore cognition without labs, grants, or years of trial recruitment.

It could supercharge everything from mental health research to behavioral design, education, and yes even marketing.

But… here’s the flip side: If AI can simulate your decisions this well, it can also be used to manipulate, nudge, or exploit behavior at scale

This might be the first real step toward cognitive AGI. It’s not conscious. But it’s close enough to change the game.
